This work depicts a female figure emerging from the waves, an allegorical embodiment of Magna Graecia's Sicily—a land once free and powerful, nourished by the richness of its natural elements.
Crowned in gold and draped in a white robe that blends with the waves, the young woman emerges from the crater of Mount Etna, symbolizing the island's vital and indomitable force. Her gaze turned skyward expresses dignity and hope for a better future, despite the wounds of the past.
Around her, two human hands attempt to strip her: one snatches her spear, a symbol of defense and autonomy, while the other seeks to unravel her ocean-like robe, a metaphor for
the plundering of Sicilian riches over time.
The goldfish, peaceful witnesses to the scene, evoke the life and fragile beauty that persist beneath the surface. Thus, in the heart of tumult and loss, the Sicilian woman remains upright, sovereign, resilient.
